Popular Burger Chain BurgerFi Closes All Upstate NY Locations Amid Bankruptcy Crisis!

A popular burger chain, BurgerFi, is closing its Upstate New York locations after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The closures will affect restaurants in Latham and Saratoga Springs, which will permanently shut their doors on December 1, as reported by News 10.

The decision to close these locations comes after franchise owners Bill, Michael, and Vincent Lia opted not to renew their agreements. According to a statement shared with The Times Union, the choice was influenced by financial troubles at the corporate level after BurgerFi International Inc. filed for bankruptcy in September.

In a heartfelt message, Bill Lia expressed gratitude to customers and employees who supported the brand over the years. “We’re grateful to our loyal customers and dedicated team members who have supported us over the years.

Their patronage and hard work have been essential to our journey. While we’re saying goodbye to BurgerFi, we look forward to exploring new possibilities for these two great locations,” Lia said.

BurgerFi, short for “Burgerfication,” is a Florida-based fast-casual restaurant chain renowned for its chef-inspired menu. The chain is popular for its hamburgers made with grass-fed Angus beef, antibiotic-free chicken, Kobe beef hot dogs, fresh-cut fries, frozen custards, and an array of craft beers and wines.

Despite its innovative menu, the company has faced significant financial challenges. According to CNN, BurgerFi, which also owns Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza restaurants, reported a loss of more than $18 million in the quarter ending July 1.

The parent company attributed its struggles to earlier store closures, rising food prices, and increased wages, all of which have significantly impacted operating costs.

The Latham and Saratoga Springs locations were the only BurgerFi restaurants in Upstate New York. The chain has approximately 100 locations nationwide, including two in New York City and one on Long Island.

The Lia family, known for their car dealership business, opened their first BurgerFi location in the area nine years ago in collaboration with restaurateur Angelo Mazzone. While the restaurants are closing, the family still owns the properties and plans to evaluate new opportunities for the spaces.

BurgerFi’s departure marks the end of a chapter for these locations, but the franchise’s legacy and customers’ loyalty will not be forgotten.
