Troy Police Shooting Raises Questions as Bodycam Footage Remains Unreleased!
TROY, N.Y. — Details remain limited in Troy following an officer-involved shooting that took place early Monday. Police Chief Dan DeWolf shared a few updates during a press conference that afternoon, reiterating information already provided earlier in the day. The identity of the suspect, the number of officers who fired their weapons, and other key details have yet to be disclosed.
Chief DeWolf mentioned that about seven officers were involved in the incident, and as part of standard procedure, those officers are currently on leave for a few days. According to police, the situation unfolded around midnight when dispatchers received a call about a man with a gun near 10th and Jacob Streets.
Officers later located someone matching the description several blocks away on 5th Avenue. When they attempted to stop him, the suspect fled but was eventually found lying near a loading dock on River Street.
Police reported that the suspect initially appeared to comply with officers’ commands but then fired a weapon at them. Officers returned fire, hitting the man, who was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital. He remains in critical but stable condition.

When asked about the possibility of releasing the footage, DeWolf indicated that it would depend on discussions with corporation counsel. “There will be a discussion, but I can’t say if we’ll do it right now,” he said.
While some police departments, such as Albany Police, have released body camera footage of officer-involved shootings shortly after they occurred, Troy Police have yet to do so in this case. Retired Troy Police Captain John Cooney shared his perspective on the matter, explaining that withholding footage could help preserve the integrity of any potential trial and prevent jury bias.
“It’s beneficial versus detrimental,” Cooney said. “The detrimental side is that we know the public wants it. We can’t give it to them at this point. And the benefit is that we preserve the validity of any trial and any potential prejudice to the jury pool.” He added that some departments prioritize public transparency and might release footage to ease concerns, but the risk of influencing a jury remains significant.
Cooney also noted that Troy Police might decide to release the footage soon, depending on how the case progresses. For now, the investigation is ongoing, and Chief DeWolf has encouraged anyone with information about the incident to contact the Troy Police Department.
