South Carolina Sees 2.5-Cent Drop in Gas Prices—Is This the Start of a Trend?

Gas prices in South Carolina have dropped by 2.5 cents per gallon in the past week, continuing a nationwide trend of falling prices, according to GasBuddy’s survey of local gas stations.

This price decrease comes as the nation recovers from the high travel demand seen during Thanksgiving when millions of people hit the road. While some areas, like the Great Lakes, saw gas prices rise just before the holiday, most parts of the country saw gas prices either stay stable or decrease slightly.

According to Patrick De Haan, the head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, the national average for gas prices remains close to the lowest levels seen since 2021.

In South Carolina, the average price of gas is $2.71 per gallon. This is 6.8 cents lower than it was a month ago and 18.4 cents lower than it was at the same time last year. The cheapest gas in the state is currently $2.39 per gallon, while the most expensive can go up to $3.39, a difference of one full dollar depending on where you fill up.

Nationally, gas prices have also fallen, though at a slower pace. The national average price has dropped by 0.6 cents per gallon in the last week, bringing the average to $3.00 per gallon.

Looking ahead, De Haan suggests that gas prices may continue to drop slightly in the coming weeks. More than 100,000 stations across the country are already offering gas for $2.99 or less per gallon, a trend expected to last through the holiday shopping season.

While there is concern about potential impacts from tariffs, if they are implemented at all, these would not affect gas prices until late January.
