MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) – Grand Central Madison, the newest Long Island Rail Road station located on Manhattan’s East Side, has been awarded the title of the world’s most beautiful passenger station for its stunning interior design.
The honor was announced on Monday by the MTA, as Grand Central Madison won UNESCO’s 2024 Prix Versailles Interior Award for the World’s Most Beautiful Passenger Station.
This award highlights outstanding architecture and design in metro stations that are either newly opened or recently renovated.
The 2024 list of the world’s most beautiful passenger stations included other impressive entries like Schafbergbahn Station in St. Wolfgang, Austria; Bell Station in Melbourne, Australia; Beijing Station in Beijing, China; Toulouse Matabiau Station in Toulouse, France; and Chiaia Metro Station in Naples, Italy.
Three major titles were awarded, including Prix Versailles, Interior, and Exterior. Among these, Grand Central Madison stood out for its exceptional interior design, making it the top choice for this prestigious award.
Grand Central Madison, which opened in January 2023, spans 700,000 square feet. It is one of the largest and most important transportation infrastructure projects in the U.S. in recent years, according to the MTA.
The station is a key terminal for the Long Island Rail Road, providing commuters with a modern and stylish space to travel through.
MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber expressed pride in the recognition, stating, “New Yorkers have known since the day it opened that Grand Central Madison is a world-class terminal.
