House Republicans Launch New Investigation into Jan. 6 Capitol Attack, Seeking to Shift Blame Away from Trump
To reshape the narrative surrounding the events of January 6, 2021, House Republicans have initiated a comprehensive reinvestigation of the Capitol attack. The goal is to divert blame away from former President Donald Trump and his supporters implicated in the attempt to overturn the 2020 election.
As Trump gears up for a potential return to the White House, the House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight recently conducted its first public hearing to reexamine the official account detailed by the House’s Select Committee on Jan. 6.
Chairman Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., opened the hearing by acknowledging Jan. 6 as a “dark day” in U.S. history but emphasized the existence of unanswered questions. The panel’s inquiry focuses on the investigation of pipe bombs left outside Republican and Democratic party headquarters during the mob siege.
The House GOP aims to release a final report on Jan. 6 to address what they consider an “incomplete narrative” presented by the previous work of the Select Committee.
Armed with newly released testimony and an 80-plus page report of initial findings, the House Administration subcommittee outlines its roadmap for the probe. Key testimony from White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, who revealed details of Trump’s actions on that day, is set to be revisited.
The panel’s report delves into various conspiracy theories surrounding Jan. 6, questioning the formation of the Select Committee and raising concerns about unidentified individuals involved in erecting a hangman’s scaffolding outside the U.S. Capitol.
During the first hearing, House Republicans scrutinized the U.S. Capitol Police about the initial detection of pipe bombs and the response time to seal off the area. U.S. Capitol Police Assistant Chief Sean Gallagher described the chaos of the day, emphasizing the challenges faced by law enforcement as the mob descended on the Capitol.
Gallagher acknowledged the failures of that day but highlighted the priority of responding to calls for help from fellow officers over achieving a perfect perimeter.
Ranking Democrat Rep. Norma Torres questioned the premise of the hearing, particularly as federal investigations are already underway.
She raised concerns about the possibility of the subcommittee peddling “crazy right-wing conspiracy theories” and attempting to distort history, alluding to distractions from the alleged corruption scheme orchestrated by the former president to overturn a free and fair election.
A recently obtained transcript of the Select Committee’s interview with an unnamed Secret Service officer, who drove the presidential SUV on Jan. 6, contradicts some aspects of Hutchinson’s testimony. The driver confirmed that Trump was insistent on going to the Capitol after the rally, corroborating parts of Hutchinson’s account.
However, the driver did not witness the altercation described by Hutchinson, raising questions about the accuracy of the initial testimony.
As House Republicans embark on this new probe, the political landscape is charged with implications for Trump’s potential return to the White House. The inquiry’s focus on diverting blame and uncovering additional details raises concerns about the politicization of the Capitol attack investigation.
