Man who pulled officer into the crowd on Jan. 6 sent to jail

A man from Colorado named Jeffrey Sabol has been sent to prison for more than five years. He was involved in dragging a police officer into a crowd during the riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021.

Along with his prison sentence, Sabol has to be under supervision for three years after his release and has to pay more than $32,000 to cover damages. This decision came from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, showing how serious they are about punishing those involved in the riot.

Sabol, along with some others, traveled from Colorado to Washington, D.C., to attend a rally supporting former President Donald Trump. They called themselves a “neighborhood watch” group. Before going to the rally, Sabol packed items like a helmet, a first aid kit, a knife, and zip ties, suggesting he was prepared for violence.

After the rally, Sabol joined the mob that stormed the Capitol. He was seen helping two rioters drag a police officer into the crowd, where the officer was attacked with a flagpole and a baton. Sabol even tried to cover up his involvement by deleting messages from his phone.

When authorities tried to arrest him, Sabol tried to flee the country. He booked a flight to Switzerland but was stopped from boarding. Instead, he rented a car and headed towards New York, where the FBI caught him on January 11, 2021.

During his hearing, Sabol admitted that he was entirely responsible for what he did and expressed regret for his actions. He said he would have apologized to the officers if they were there. Sabol’s case is just one among over 1,300 people charged with crimes related to the Capitol riot. More than 800 of them have already been sentenced, showing how seriously the authorities are taking this event.
