DEADLY I-80 CRASH: Honda Accord Collides With Large Truck, DRIVER KILLED and Traffic Severely Impacted

The California Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly collision between a car and a large truck on westbound I-80 just west of the Bay Bridge toll plaza.

According to the California Highway Patrol, officers from the San Francisco Area Office responded to a report of a two-vehicle traffic crash on westbound I-80 going off the Bay Bridge at the lanes linking to I-880 on Monday afternoon at approximately 1:20 p.m. Responding cops were informed that the vehicles involved were described as a gold Honda Accord and a large truck.

When San Francisco CHP and fire personnel got on the scene, they discovered that the driver and lone occupant of the Honda had sustained severe injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the big rig was not injured.

Chopper video from the aftermath showed the Honda had suffered significant front-end damage after seemingly colliding with the back of the large trailer. The two right lanes were initially shut in response to the incident.

At 2:12 p.m., the right lane of I-80 remained closed. The lane closures greatly slowed eastbound traffic approaching the Bay Bridge from San Francisco, resulting in traffic backups to the I-80/I-280 interchange.

At roughly 3 p.m., the Honda was lifted onto a flatbed tow truck for removal, and the right lane reopened shortly after. The inquiry into this occurrence is now ongoing. The Alameda Coroner’s Office will announce the identification of the deceased.
