Ashley Heshmat, a 45-year-old man from Albany, has pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of his brother-in-law, Justin Bishop. This admission came during a court appearance on Monday, where Heshmat acknowledged killing Bishop, who had sheltered him despite his troubling behavior.

Under a plea agreement with prosecutors, Heshmat is expected to face a sentence of 20 years to life in prison for the stabbing death of Bishop, who was married to Heshmat’s sister, Crystal Heshmat.

If Heshmat had been convicted and gone to trial, he could have faced a maximum sentence of 25 years to life. During his hearing before Judge William Little, Heshmat remained calm and spoke quietly when answering the judge’s questions.

Family members of the victim, including Bishop’s brother, Noah Merrill, were present in the courtroom. Following the hearing, Merrill urged those present to remember his brother Justin for his loving nature and service to others.
