New York Gun Violence Reduction: Statewide Decrease and Major Drops in Key Areas!

Law enforcement officials in New York recently made a significant arrest that highlights their ongoing efforts to keep the state safe. Despite a general decrease in crime across the nation, law enforcement is never truly finished.

This was evident when officers from the Buffalo office of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) arrested a dangerous criminal in Upstate New York. On August 14, 2024, after a lengthy investigation, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the arrest of Gianfranco Torres-Navarro, a notorious gang leader from Peru.

Torres-Navarro, 38, is the reputed leader of the Peruvian gang known as Los Killers de Ventanilla y Callao, a group that has been linked to dozens of murders in Peru. He had been on the run from Peruvian authorities since 2019.

The arrest followed Torres-Navarro’s illegal entry into the United States on May 16, 2024. He crossed the border near Roma, Texas, where CBP officers apprehended him.

After his initial arrest, Torres-Navarro was issued an appearance ticket to report to an immigration court. However, he failed to show up for his court date, leading to a nationwide search by the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) division of ICE.

The ERO’s search eventually led them to Endicott, New York, where Torres-Navarro was located and arrested. He is currently being held at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility in Batavia, New York, while he awaits a hearing with an immigration judge.

Given his status as a non-citizen who entered the country illegally, Torres-Navarro is subject to removal from the United States. This arrest reminds us of the ongoing efforts by U.S. law enforcement to track down and apprehend dangerous individuals, even those who have crossed international borders.
