Troy Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for the Murder of Albany Hip-Hop Artist Dominique Eley!
A Troy man was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Albany hip-hop artist Dominique Eley. On Thursday, Tyshaun Purvis, 33, was given a sentence of 25 years to life for the murder plus an additional nine years for drug charges. He also faces more time for a weapons conviction from last week, leading to a total prison term of at least 40 years.
The crime occurred in July 2022 near North Pearl Street and Livingston Avenue in Albany. Eley, who was well-known for his performances along the East Coast and his work with youth advocacy programs in Albany, was fatally shot by Purvis.
Purvis was found guilty in May. In court, Eley’s family delivered emotional victim impact statements. Deborah Eley, the victim’s mother, expressed her sorrow and hoped Purvis would find redemption during his imprisonment. She spoke of the broader impact of the violence on the community and offered a prayer for Purvis.
Gary Eley, Dominique’s father, described his daughter as his “heart” and held up a cherished item made by Dominique when she was a child. He spoke of his grief and anger, questioning why Purvis would kill over what he heard was a sum of $1,500.
Dominique’s aunt, Robyn Jones, shared her struggle with forgiveness. Despite her pain, she chose to forgive Purvis, acknowledging that everyone involved lost something significant.
Assistant District Attorney Ryan Carty explained that Purvis shot Eley three times in the back solely for money, showing his lack of concern for Eley’s life.
Judge William Little condemned Purvis as a “cold-blooded killer” and a “menace to this community,” stating he should not be allowed another chance to walk the streets of Albany County.

When given the opportunity, Purvis chose not to speak. His attorney mentioned that Purvis maintains his innocence and plans to appeal the conviction.
