Georgia Cracks Down on Voter Fraud: Two Residents Face Criminal Charges for Double Voting!

Two Georgia residents have been criminally charged with voting fraud after being accused of voting twice in the 2022 midterm elections. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC), these are the first known prosecutions for voting fraud in Georgia in recent years.

Grand juries in Forsyth and Fannin counties indicted the defendants. They are accused of casting in-person ballots in Georgia and then voting again in other states—one in Arizona and the other in Texas.

The cases of double voting were discovered through the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC), a system designed to identify and prevent voter fraud in states.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger highlighted the effectiveness of ERIC in catching these cases. He emphasized that Georgia’s membership in ERIC, alongside 30 other states, enables the state to receive notifications if someone registers and votes in another state.

“One of the benefits of Georgia being a member of the Electronic Registration Information Center is there’s 30 other states that are members of that organization,” Raffensperger explained.

“So if you go ahead and register in another state, and you go ahead and vote— we’ll get notification about that. And that’s exactly what happened here—ERIC really stood the test.”

The Secretary of State’s office has been vigilant in identifying potential cases of double voting. In January, Raffensperger referred 17 such cases to district attorneys across Georgia.

One of these cases involved a 72-year-old man in Tift County who allegedly voted twice—once in Georgia and once in Texas. However, this particular case has been closed following the man’s death in March 2024.

These prosecutions signal Georgia’s ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of its elections and ensure that every vote counts fairly. The state’s use of ERIC is seen as a crucial tool in detecting and preventing voter fraud, reinforcing the importance of cooperation between states in safeguarding the electoral process.
