EEE Virus Alert: New York State Health Officials Issue Important Precautions!

Governor Kathy Hochul is advising New Yorkers to be extra cautious about mosquito protection this Labor Day weekend. With mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile virus and eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) on the rise, it’s crucial to take preventive measures.

10 cases of West Nile virus have been reported outside New York City. Additionally, 14 horses in the state have tested positive for EEE.  Although no human cases of EEE have been confirmed in New York, neighboring states like Vermont, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire have reported cases, including a fatality in New Hampshire.

To reduce the risk of mosquito bites and the diseases they carry, experts suggest several precautions. Wearing long sleeves and pants when outside can help shield your skin.

Using insect repellent with DEET is also recommended. Remove any standing water around your home, as mosquitoes breed in these areas. Also, check that window screens are intact to keep mosquitoes out.

“Prevention remains the most effective method of protection from exposure to mosquito-transmitted diseases and can be as simple as protecting your exposed skin with clothing and applying mosquito repellent,” Governor Hochul said.
