A Man Was Given More than A Year in Jail for Making Thousands of Unwanted Calls to Congressional Offices

Man Jailed for Over a Year After Bombarding Congress with Calls!

A man from Maryland, Ade Salim Lilly, was sentenced to over one year in prison for making thousands of harassing and threatening phone calls to congressional offices across the United States.

This case highlights a serious issue, as Lilly made around 12,000 phone calls to more than 50 offices over 19 months. His actions even included a death threat to a congressional staff member during one of these calls.

The judge in the case, U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, sentenced Lilly to 13 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Prosecutors had pushed for an 18-month sentence, emphasizing the need to prevent others from engaging in similar behavior.

They pointed out that threats against members of Congress have surged by 400% over the past six years, according to Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger.

This case comes at a time when political tensions are high, and criticism of political views often escalates into threats of violence. Prosecutors noted that the increase in such threats poses a significant risk of normalizing violent expressions, especially during an election year.

Lilly had pleaded guilty to two charges in May: one count of interstate communications with a threat to kidnap or injure and one count of making repeated telephone calls.
