Tragic Discovery: Schenectady Man Found Dead on Appalachian Trail Sheriff Confirms Identity!

The Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office has identified the hiker who was found dead along the Andy Layne area of the Appalachian Trail on September 7 as 67-year-old Thomas Vanetten from Schenectady, NY.

Authorities were alerted to the incident on Saturday, and emergency personnel, along with sheriff’s deputies, were quickly dispatched to the scene near Lambert’s Meadow Shelter.

Upon arrival, officials confirmed that Vanetten had died at the scene. Currently, the investigation into his death is ongoing, with no foul play suspected at this time. The body has been taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner for further examination to determine the official cause of death.
