Heartbreaking: 16-Year-Old Charged in Killing of 57-Year-Old Mom During Condo Robbery!

A 16-year-old boy was arrested on Thursday and is now facing murder and other serious charges after police say he fatally shot a mother during a robbery in Chinatown earlier this month. The incident happened at the victim’s condo while she was trying to protect her husband and son.

Due to the boy’s age, the police have not released his name. He is charged with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, three counts of first-degree burglary, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. These charges were filed in connection to the death of 57-year-old Ying Zhu Liu.

The tragic event took place at 44 Market St., just a short distance from the Manhattan Bridge, around 11 p.m. on September 9. Liu was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say Liu suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was unresponsive when officers arrived. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident began when two males followed Liu’s 61-year-old husband into their building and up the elevator to the eighth-floor hallway. During the chaos, Liu stepped out into the hallway to try and intervene. It was at this point that she was shot in front of her husband and her 32-year-old son. The son was also attacked and pistol-whipped by the suspects. The thieves then fled the scene, stealing the husband’s phone.

Police are now actively searching for at least one more teenage suspect believed to be involved in this crime. This case is part of a troubling pattern, as this 16-year-old is the latest teenager this week to be charged with a deadly shooting in New York City.

In another separate incident in Queens, a 15-year-old boy was charged just a day earlier with the murder of a 66-year-old man. This victim was driving through St. Albans on Monday afternoon when he was hit by what police think was a stray bullet. The shot caused the man to lose control of his car and crash into a 23-year-old pedestrian, who was injured.
