A 68-year-old man was violently robbed in the parking lot of a ShopRite in Rochelle Park, according to police reports.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 24, around 7:30 p.m., in the complex on West Passaic Street.

Police say that the suspect, later identified as Ramsey Thompson, approached the elderly victim and asked for money. When the victim refused, the situation escalated quickly.

According to Rochelle Park Police Captain James DePreta, Thompson forcefully pushed the victim to the ground and then grabbed the man’s wallet from his back pocket.

Rochelle Park Police officers were quick to respond following the robbery. Sgt. Brian Cobb, along with Patrolmen Todd Starling, Joe Buono, and Evan Migliore, spotted Thompson walking on Bennett Avenue shortly after the incident.

After stopping him, officers found the victim’s wallet and its contents in Thompson’s possession.

Police charged Thompson with robbery and took him to the Bergen County Jail. The officers managed to recover the stolen wallet, which contained cash, credit cards, and gift cards and returned it to the victim.

Fortunately, the elderly man did not require medical attention following the attack.

Local authorities are encouraging anyone with additional information or witnesses of the event to come forward to assist in the investigation.

Such incidents are unsettling for the community, especially as the victim was a senior citizen who may have been targeted because of his age.
