Tragic Death During Childbirth: Another Woman of Color Dies at Woodhull Hospital

Another woman has tragically lost her life during childbirth at Woodhull Hospital in Bedford-Stuyvesant, marking the third death of a woman of color in labor at this facility since 2020.

Bevorlin Garcia Barrios, a 24-year-old, died on September 15 after undergoing an emergency C-section, as confirmed by her boyfriend, Nelson Ramirez.

Ramirez explained that Barrios went to the hospital because she was feeling unwell.

After doctors performed the C-section, they emerged shortly after to inform him that she had died.

Ramirez expressed his confusion and grief, stating, “I done crying at this point. I’m done crying. I want something to be solved.”

This tragic event comes on the heels of another heartbreaking case from last November, when Christine Fields, a 30-year-old, died following a C-section at the same hospital.

The New York City Medical Examiner concluded that Fields died from internal hemorrhaging.

Her boyfriend, Jose Perez, stood with Ramirez outside Woodhull Hospital, both men demanding immediate changes to prevent further tragedies. “Something needs to be done,” Perez declared. “We can’t keep having this.”

Woodhull Hospital is operated by New York City Health and Hospitals, which has not commented on Barrios’ case due to patient privacy laws.

They also have not publicly addressed the previous cases of the other two women.

However, the hospital system released a statement to Eyewitness News indicating that new leadership has been appointed to the OBGYN and anesthesia departments at Woodhull Hospital.

Additionally, they have implemented new training for staff who care for pregnant patients.

In their statement, the hospital system said, “Over the last years, we have been particularly focused on helping reduce the unacceptable maternal mortality rates among women of color through innovative interventions.”

Meanwhile, the New York State Department of Health has refrained from commenting on Barrios’ death, stating that they do not address matters that are or maybe, subject to ongoing review or investigation.

The alarming pattern of maternal deaths among women of color at Woodhull Hospital has raised serious concerns within the community.

It has brought to light the ongoing issues within the healthcare system. Families affected by these tragic incidents are calling for accountability and significant changes to ensure the safety of all mothers during childbirth.

As communities continue to rally for justice and better care, the need for reform in maternal healthcare is more critical than ever.
