Schenectady Fire: One Person Dies in Early Morning Blaze at Apartment Complex!

City officials have confirmed that one person died in an early morning fire at 1331 Lower Broadway in Schenectady. Fire crews responded to reports of a structure fire around 5:15 AM on Wednesday.

When NEWS10 arrived at the scene, they witnessed heavy smoke and large flames coming from the back of the apartment building.

Schenectady Fire Chief Donald Mareno stated that when firefighters reached the building, they encountered intense flames. The crews quickly began working to put out the fire and searched the building for anyone who might be inside.

Chief Mareno confirmed that they found one person inside the building, who was then taken to a nearby hospital before being transferred to Westchester Medical Center for further treatment.

Chief Mareno explained, “We received a report of a structure fire at 1331 Lower Broadway and were informed that there could still be people inside.”

NEWS10 reported seeing a person being removed from the building and CPR being performed at the scene. According to neighbors, the building is a two-story apartment complex.

The Fire Investigation Unit is now leading the investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

Chief Mareno mentioned that the building sustained smoke, water, and fire damage, but the extent of the structural damage is still unclear. The fire has since been extinguished, but officials are still assessing the situation.

At this point, it is uncertain if the building is a total loss. Chief Mareno added, “Codes officials will arrive later to evaluate the building’s condition and decide if it’s safe and sustainable.”
