Starting November 1, families in New York State who are eligible for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) will begin receiving financial assistance.
The goal of this program is to help households manage energy costs during the winter months, ensuring that residents can stay warm without being overwhelmed by high utility bills.
If you haven’t applied for HEAP yet, now is the time to act. This program is designed to assist those in need by helping them pay their energy bills, which can be a major concern during the colder months.
The amount of money you receive depends on the size of your household and other qualifying factors. As long as the funds are available and you meet the income requirements, you can benefit from this program.
Even if your heat is included in your rent, you may still qualify for a payment through HEAP. Depending on your living situation, you could receive anywhere from $21 to over $900, depending on how you heat your home and your specific circumstances.
For example, households living in government-subsidized housing or group settings with heat included in their rent will receive $21.
Those whose heating costs are part of their rent can expect between $45 and $50. Households that use oil, kerosene, or propane as their main heat source and pay directly to the vendor may receive $900 or more, with applicable add-ons.
Those who heat their homes with wood, wood pellets, coal, or other deliverable fuels and pay their vendor directly may qualify for $635 or more, plus additional benefits.
If your home uses electricity or natural gas as the primary heat source, you could be eligible for at least $400, with applicable add-ons, based on your household’s actual usage.
