Mechanicville Man Arrested for Drunk Driving with Child in Car – Shocking Incident
State Police have arrested a Mechanicville resident, Mark D. Knickerbocker, age 40, for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol with a child in his vehicle.
The arrest occurred on October 18 after Knickerbocker was stopped for a traffic violation on Saratoga Avenue in Waterford.
According to authorities, Knickerbocker’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was recorded at 0.9%, surpassing New York’s legal limit of 0.08%.
At the time of the traffic stop, a child under the age of 16 was present in the vehicle, leading to further concerns about the child’s safety.
Knickerbocker is now facing multiple charges, including felony driving while intoxicated (DWI) and endangering the welfare of a child. He was also cited for additional traffic violations.
In accordance with standard procedures in cases involving children, the child was safely handed over to a family member. There were no reports of injury.
Knickerbocker is expected to appear in Waterford Town Court on November 14 to respond to the charges. The severity of the charges, especially involving a minor, has raised community concerns.
The case highlights New York’s stringent measures against driving under the influence, particularly when minors are involved.
Under Leandra’s Law, it is a felony offense to drive while intoxicated with a child under 16 in the vehicle. This law has been part of the state’s ongoing efforts to combat dangerous driving and protect vulnerable passengers, particularly children.
State Police emphasized the importance of responsible driving, urging the public to make safer choices and avoid drinking and driving, especially when children are present.
