Utica Parole Absconder Arrested After Intense Foot Chase, Loaded Handgun Found!
UTICA, N.Y. – A routine parole check quickly escalated into a pursuit on the streets of Utica, culminating in the arrest of a parole absconder and the discovery of a loaded handgun, police report.
According to New York State Parole officials, 23-year-old Joshua Lopez of Utica was spotted on the 900 block of Sunset Avenue. When officers attempted to stop Lopez, he reportedly fled on foot, carrying a bag.
During the chase, Lopez abandoned the bag, which was later found to contain a loaded 9mm handgun, officials said. The pursuit continued until officers apprehended Lopez just behind a nearby residence.
At this point, Utica Police Department (UPD) officers arrived on the scene to assist, and Lopez was taken into custody.
He faces multiple charges, including two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, and an active New York State parole warrant.
This arrest underscores ongoing efforts by local law enforcement and state parole officers to monitor parolees and respond swiftly to any parole violations, particularly when weapons are involved.
