Trump Expected to Name Marco Rubio as Secretary of State Nominee!
President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering Florida Senator Marco Rubio for the position of secretary of state. However, two sources familiar with the discussions shared with CBS News say the decision isn’t yet final.
If Rubio is officially nominated, it would mark a notable shift in their relationship, which began on a competitive note during the 2016 Republican primaries. Back then, Trump and Rubio were well-known rivals, with Trump famously referring to Rubio as “Little Marco,” while Rubio, in return, made jabs about Trump’s character during a presidential debate.
Despite these initial conflicts, the two have since reconciled, with Rubio actively campaigning alongside Trump in recent years. The news, first reported by The New York Times, indicates a sense of confidence on Trump’s part in Rubio’s potential for the role. Although Rubio’s spokesperson has yet to respond to the reports, the senator appears to be at the forefront of Trump’s considerations for the position.
However, Rubio isn’t the only name in the mix. As CBS News previously reported, Tennessee Senator Bill Hagerty, a Republican and former ambassador to Japan, is also being considered. Hagerty’s foreign policy background makes him a solid alternative candidate.
Rubio, 53, brings extensive foreign policy experience to the table. As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the lead Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Rubio is known for his hardline stance on China and has developed a broad understanding of international issues.
With Republicans set to control the Senate in January, Rubio’s confirmation process would likely proceed smoothly with the support of his GOP colleagues.
If Rubio is indeed nominated and confirmed, his departure from the Senate would create an open seat in Florida. Under Florida law, the governor has the power to appoint a temporary replacement for any vacant U.S. Senate seat, meaning Governor Ron DeSantis would have the authority to select Rubio’s interim successor.
Since winning his second term last week, Trump has been making various key appointments, with Rubio’s potential nomination standing out as a significant choice. As Trump’s administration prepares for another term, more announcements are expected in the coming weeks.
