Massive Blaze Causes Extensive Damage to Kennewick Storage Unit Complex!

A massive fire heavily damaged several storage units in Kennewick on Tuesday evening, leaving a trail of destruction and prompting a swift response from fire crews across multiple departments.

The blaze, which broke out at the Garage Town rentals located at 725 N. Edison St., quickly spread through the facility, causing significant damage to the property.

Fire officials reported that the incident began around 5 p.m. when they received the first call about the fire. Within just over seven minutes, the Kennewick Fire Department was on the scene, working tirelessly to control the flames.

Backup was quickly called in, with additional support provided by Benton County Fire District 1, the Pasco Fire Department, and Richland Fire and Emergency Services. Their combined efforts prevented the fire from spreading further within the large complex.

One person who rented one of the affected storage units inhaled some smoke while trying to assess the situation.

Thankfully, medics checked the individual, and no hospital treatment was required. According to Deputy Fire Chief Michael Heffner, no other injuries were reported, and no one was inside the storage units when the fire started.

Firefighters faced challenges accessing the flames due to the metal garage doors that shielded the units. Using saws, they cut through the doors to reach the source of the fire.

After approximately 30 minutes of coordinated effort, the fire was brought under control. However, crews remained on-site overnight to ensure no flare-ups occurred and to monitor the situation closely.

The extent of the damage is severe for several units. Three storage units were deemed unsafe for entry due to extensive fire damage, while another three units suffered smoke and water damage.

The total cost of the damage is still being assessed, but the impact on renters as they deal with the aftermath of the fire is significant.

Fire investigators are still working to determine what caused the blaze. While the exact cause remains under investigation, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety and precautions in facilities like storage units.

The fire’s proximity to Kamiakin High School added an extra layer of concern. Still, thanks to the swift actions of the responding fire departments, no other structures in the area were affected.

Tenants and authorities are waiting for further updates on the investigation. The priority remains ensuring the safety of the community and understanding the circumstances that led to such a destructive event.
