District Attorney Investigates Police Shooting of Armed Man in San Mateo!
A man was shot by officers from the San Mateo and Burlingame police departments early Saturday morning following reports of possible gunfire. Authorities confirmed that the man was in stable condition as of Saturday afternoon.
The incident began when the San Mateo Police Department (SMPD) received a 911 call at 2:53 a.m., reporting possible gunshots in the 800 block of North San Mateo Drive.
Officers responding to the call encountered a man walking near the intersection of Jefferson Court and State Street. According to the SMPD, the man pointed a firearm at the officers and then fled the scene.
A backup was called, and officers pursued the suspect northbound on Jefferson Court. The chase ended temporarily near Peninsula Avenue when the officers lost sight of him. A short time later, an officer from the Burlingame Police Department (BPD) located the suspect on Bayswater Avenue near Myrtle Road. Police reported that the man was yelling in the street and still holding a firearm.
Officers from both departments attempted to de-escalate the situation by giving commands to the suspect, but he did not comply. An officer deployed a less-than-lethal rubber projectile in an effort to disarm the man. Despite being struck, the suspect continued to hold onto his firearm.
Following this, one officer from SMPD and another from BPD discharged their service weapons, striking the man. He fell to the ground, allowing officers to secure his loaded firearm. The weapon was identified as a .45 caliber Glock pistol.
Officers on the scene provided medical assistance to the suspect before he was taken to a nearby hospital. By Saturday afternoon, police reported that his condition was stable.
The San Mateo Police Department is investigating the suspect. Meanwhile, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent review of the officer’s use of force during the incident.
Both officers who discharged their firearms have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure during such investigations.
