Shocking Arrest: NY Lawmaker Eddie Gibbs Handcuffed After Heated Traffic Stop!
New York State Assemblymember Eddie Gibbs was arrested and summoned for disorderly conduct by the New York City Police Department (NYPD) in his own East Harlem district.

Frederick Thomas, a security guard with the New York City Housing Authority, witnessed the event. He reported that nearly a dozen police cars arrived at the scene on Lexington Avenue, right outside the James Weldon Johnson Community Center.
Officers from the Strategic Response Group, a special unit of the NYPD, patted down Gibbs, who is Black, put him in handcuffs, and took him away.
Three other eyewitnesses confirmed Gibbs’ arrest to reporters from POLITICO. The news was first reported by the New York Post and quickly spread across local media.
After being released from the police precinct later that afternoon, Gibbs spoke to journalists, as reported by Fox 5. He admitted his mistake and expressed regret.
“We must respect car stops,” Gibbs said. “It’s dangerous. Officers don’t know who they’re dealing with; officers don’t know who they’re pulling aside. And I added to that fear.”
He continued, “I accept my summons, and I was wrong,” offering an apology to the officers involved.
His words show he understands the risks officers face during traffic stops and acknowledges his role in escalating the situation.
An NYPD spokesperson confirmed the details, stating that officers had stopped a car early Thursday afternoon, taken Gibbs into custody, and summoned him for disorderly conduct. They did not provide more information about what was said during the incident.
Attempts to reach Gibbs by phone and through his office were unsuccessful. His district office was closed on Thursday, and calls went unanswered. It’s unclear if his office will release a formal statement about what happened.
Gibbs is known to be a close legislative ally of Mayor Eric Adams. While Adams’ administration has been involved in some criminal investigations recently, there is no indication that Gibbs’ arrest is related to those cases.
This arrest seems to be an isolated incident resulting from the traffic stop.
