Shocking Subway Stabbing: NYC Man Freed Without Bail After Alleged Attack!
A shocking incident unfolded at a Manhattan subway station when a man was allegedly stabbed for accidentally bumping into another passenger. The accused, 27-year-old Raymond Kwok, is now free without bail despite the severity of the charges against him.
The altercation took place on the night of September 20th, just before 9 p.m., at the entrance of the L train station at 14th Street and First Avenue in the East Village. According to authorities, Kwok’s 29-year-old victim accidentally bumped into him while attempting to walk down the staircase. This minor collision quickly escalated into a heated argument.
In a sudden act of violence, Kwok allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim in the back. The entire incident was caught on surveillance footage, and witnesses reported seeing the confrontation happen swiftly before Kwok fled the scene.
The victim, although injured, was transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition, where he received stitches for the wound. Thankfully, his injuries were not life-threatening, and he is expected to recover.
On September 23rd, three days after the attack, Kwok was arrested at the same subway station where the crime occurred. Upon his arrest, police officers discovered that Kwok was carrying three knives, including a switchblade, raising concerns about the potential for further violence.
Kwok, who resides in the East Village, has no known prior criminal record, which may have influenced the court’s decision. At his arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court, he faced several charges, including second-degree assault, attempted assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. Due to the seriousness of the charges and the potential risk he posed to the public, prosecutors requested that Kwok be held on $25,000 cash bail.
However, Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Michael Gaffey opted to release Kwok without requiring him to post bail. Instead, Kwok was placed on supervised release, allowing him to remain free while awaiting his next court appearance. This decision has raised eyebrows, as the charges are considered bail-eligible under New York law.
Kwok is now scheduled to appear in court again on October 31st to face the charges brought against him. The case has sparked discussions about the city’s bail reform laws and the criteria used to determine whether an individual should be released without bail, especially in cases involving violent crimes.
