Albany Tragedy: Man Fatally Shot on North Pearl St. After Early Jail Release!

A man killed on Albany’s North Pearl Street over the weekend has been identified as 49-year-old Mohammed Poquee, according to the Albany Police.

Poquee was found with multiple gunshot wounds in an apartment building on North Pearl Street.

Poquee had been released from jail early in 2023 after serving more than 20 years for rape charges. Originally sentenced to 32 years, a plea deal that would have reduced his sentence to only 10 years was discovered in 2021.

However, Poquee was never informed about this deal by his public defender at the time. Court documents revealed that “Plaintiff did not learn of this 10-year offer until it was discovered after 2021.

Had the plaintiff known about the 10-year plea offer prior to his trial, he would have accepted it, as evidenced by the proceeding in front of Judge Breslin on June 15, 2000.”

Poquee was found by the police with multiple gunshot wounds to his body at 260 North Pearl Street around 12:10 AM on Sunday.

Investigators have indicated that there was a gathering in the building’s vestibule before the shooting took place.

The police currently believe this homicide to be an isolated incident, although no arrests have been made so far. The investigation is still ongoing.

This tragic event has added to the recent spate of violent incidents in Albany. While no further details about possible suspects have been released, the community remains on alert as authorities work to gather more information about what led to Poquee’s death.

Now, as Albany police continue their investigation, there are growing concerns about safety in the area as residents grapple with this violent crime.
