3 Hurt in San Francisco Crash on Southbound I-280

In a distressing incident on Monday afternoon, a wrong-way driver on southbound I-280 in San Francisco initiated a three-car collision just north of San Jose Ave., resulting in three individuals being hospitalized, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The chaotic episode unfolded around 2:30 p.m. when a driver, for reasons yet unknown, was heading north in the southbound lanes near the Geneva Avenue on-ramp. This reckless move triggered a chain reaction, causing significant damage to at least two vehicles on the southbound lanes of I-280.

Promptly responding to the scene, first responders, including multiple CHP units, fire crews, and ambulances, were confronted with a challenging situation. Chopper footage captured the aftermath, revealing the severity of the collision and the need for fire crews to extricate an individual from a silver sedan—the vehicle reported to be traveling in the wrong direction on the freeway.

As a consequence of the collision, at least three individuals were rushed to hospitals for treatment, underscoring the gravity of the incident. The extent of their injuries remains undisclosed, but the urgency with which they were hospitalized emphasizes the impact of the collision.

Adding a layer of complexity to the situation, CHP had received earlier reports of the wrong-way vehicle being involved in multiple traffic collisions while driving north on southbound I-280. This raises questions about the circumstances leading up to the major crash and the state of mind of the driver involved.
