28-Year-Old Charged with Rape After Breaking into Upper East Side Apartment!
A 28-year-old man, Donovan Murphy, has been indicted for allegedly raping a 29-year-old woman in her Upper East Side apartment while she slept.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office announced the indictment on October 28, detailing a series of events that led to the violent assault.
The incidents began around 12:30 a.m. on September 28, when Murphy attempted to follow another woman into her apartment building.
He buzzed multiple apartments in an effort to gain entry but retreated when the woman’s husband confronted him with a baseball bat.
Approximately three hours later, at around 3:40 a.m., Murphy successfully entered the second woman’s apartment located near East 92nd Street and First Avenue.
Upon entering the victim’s apartment, Murphy allegedly climbed into her bed. When the woman awoke to find him there, she screamed and fell to the floor, feeling dizzy.
Prosecutors say that Murphy then attacked her, punching her repeatedly in the face and choking her before sexually assaulting her. The assault resulted in severe injuries, including a fractured facial bone and a deep laceration to her mouth.
After the attack, Murphy reportedly stole several bank cards from the victim’s wallet and used them to purchase items at a Bronx pharmacy before fleeing the scene. The victim was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital and is currently in stable condition.
Murphy was arrested on October 2 by the NYPD’s Manhattan Special Victims Squad after investigators tracked him using surveillance footage from locations where he made purchases with the stolen cards.
He faces multiple charges, including first-degree rape, burglary as a sexually motivated felony, and assault.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg stated, “Every New Yorker deserves to be safe in their own home,” emphasizing the importance of community safety and support for survivors of sexual violence.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant D.A. Christina Kapalko under the supervision of senior members of the Special Victims Division.
Residents expressed shock and concern over the incident, highlighting their feelings of vulnerability in what is typically considered a safe neighborhood.
One resident remarked on the need for heightened awareness and caution in light of such violent acts occurring close to home.
