Recent data reveals a notable drop in shooting incidents across New York State, with impressive reductions in the Hudson Valley, Long Island, and Western New York. Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a nearly 30 percent decrease in shooting incidents over the past year.

Governor Hochul proudly shared that shootings with injuries have dropped by 29 percent through July 2024 compared to the same period last year.

“Keeping New Yorkers safe is my top priority,” Hochul stated. She emphasized that the state’s efforts to reduce gun violence are effective and pledged to continue her work towards safer communities across New York.

The Hudson Valley has seen remarkable progress. In Yonkers, Westchester County, shooting incidents with injuries have decreased by an impressive 57 percent. Yonkers leads the state in reducing gun violence.

“The numbers don’t lie,” Hochul tweeted, highlighting the success of the GIVE initiative. This initiative, which invests in law enforcement and collaborates with community partners, has contributed significantly to these reductions.

Long Island’s Nassau County also saw a substantial decline in shootings, with a 56 percent reduction. This progress underscores the effectiveness of the state’s strategies in addressing gun violence.

Overall, the data indicates a 21 percent drop in the number of people killed by gun violence from January 1 to July 31, 2024. During this period, 70 individuals lost their lives compared to 89 in the same months of 2023.

These statistics come from police departments participating in New York State’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative. This program supports 28 police departments across 21 counties, mainly outside New York City. The GIVE initiative has played a crucial role in these significant reductions in gun violence.
