A 70-year-old man was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident in El Cajon, California, on Tuesday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The incident took place around 6 p.m. when the man, who was using a walker, attempted to cross Jamacha Boulevard near Pointe Parkway. Authorities noted that the man was jaywalking at the time of the accident.

A dark-colored SUV, traveling westbound on Jamacha Boulevard, struck the pedestrian. Witnesses reported that the vehicle ran through a green light before colliding with the man. The impact caused severe damage to the vehicle, including a shattered windshield and a broken driver’s side mirror.

After the collision, the driver reportedly made a U-turn and fled the scene, heading eastbound on Jamacha Boulevard. Witnesses noticed sparks coming from underneath the SUV as it sped away.
