Beacon Police Heroically De-escalate Crisis: Woman with Knife Rescued in Grocery Store!
Beacon Police successfully resolved a tense situation involving a woman in crisis at the All In One Food Mart on 1020 Wolcott Avenue in Dutchess County. Beacon Police Chief Thomas Figlia reported that officers arrived at the scene with a specialist from Mental Health America after receiving a call about the incident.
Upon their arrival, they found the woman calm but incoherent. As they tried to speak with her, she unexpectedly pulled a kitchen knife from her pocket, held it against her throat, and slowly retreated into the store.
Officers continued to talk to her, trying to keep the situation under control. One group of officers safely evacuated a store employee, while another group entered the store to de-escalate the situation. Despite their efforts, the woman remained largely unresponsive, making communication difficult.
The situation took a turn when the second group of officers engaged her directly. After some time, she dropped the knife, allowing officers to take her into custody without further incident safely.
During the encounter, officers noticed that the woman had a previously self-inflicted wound on her stomach. Emergency medical services were called to the scene, and the woman was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance for medical treatment and a mental health evaluation.
The quick and coordinated response of Beacon Police, along with the assistance of a mental health professional, helped ensure that the situation ended peacefully, prioritizing the safety of everyone involved.
