Breaking News: Accused Killer Ashley Heshmat Before Monday’s Court Appearance!
Ashley Heshmat, a 45-year-old man from Albany, has pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of his brother-in-law, Justin Bishop. This admission came during a court appearance on Monday, where Heshmat acknowledged killing Bishop, who had sheltered him despite his troubling behavior.
Under a plea agreement with prosecutors, Heshmat is expected to face a sentence of 20 years to life in prison for the stabbing death of Bishop, who was married to Heshmat’s sister, Crystal Heshmat.
If Heshmat had been convicted and gone to trial, he could have faced a maximum sentence of 25 years to life. During his hearing before Judge William Little, Heshmat remained calm and spoke quietly when answering the judge’s questions.
Family members of the victim, including Bishop’s brother, Noah Merrill, were present in the courtroom. Following the hearing, Merrill urged those present to remember his brother Justin for his loving nature and service to others.
Heshmat has been in custody since shortly after the discovery of Bishop’s body on January 14 at their shared home on Rose Court. His sentencing is set for October 16.
In previous interviews, Crystal Heshmat revealed the struggles her family faced with her brother Ashley, who had been dealing with various physical and mental health issues. She expressed her frustration about trying to get him the help he needed, saying, “We had tried, and it felt like until something happened, we were going to get laughed at.”
Crystal Heshmat explained that she eventually decided to leave the home with her young son due to concerns for their safety. Despite her worries, Bishop chose to remain in the house to look after Ashley, as he was deeply committed to helping his troubled brother-in-law. Crystal was not present in the courtroom for Heshmat’s guilty plea.
Justin Bishop grew up in the Capital Region and spent time living in Nassau and Schenectady before graduating from Columbia High School in 1993. During his school years, he was involved in activities like the Explorer Scouts and was a member of the cross-country team.
In his professional life, Bishop worked as a nurse, beginning his career at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore before spending nearly 20 years at St. Peter’s Hospital.
The couple was featured in the Baltimore Sun’s real estate section after purchasing a house near the Johns Hopkins campus in 2003, showcasing their commitment to building a life together.
This tragic incident has deeply affected both families, highlighting the challenges of dealing with mental health issues and the tragic consequences that can arise from them.
