Breaking News: NYC Man Sentenced for Stealing $200,000 Worth of Jewelry at Wyoming Valley Mall!
WILKES-BARRE — A man from New York City has been sentenced after being caught stealing over $200,000 worth of jewelry from a store inside the Wyoming Valley Mall.
Tyron Malik Lawson, a 37-year-old from Brooklyn, was accused of breaking into Banter by Piercing Pagoda on September 22, 2022.
Lawson reportedly used a tool or key to open locks on two jewelry display cases and took 409 pieces of jewelry.
Police were able to track him down after he abandoned his car, a Honda Accord, near the Luzerne County Assistance Office on South Washington Street. Investigators found a GPS device in the car, leading them to Lawson.
During a search of the vehicle, police found Lawson’s New York driver’s license, several phones, tools used for picking locks, bags full of stolen jewelry, and even display trays from the store. This helped confirm Lawson’s involvement in the heist.
In court, Lawson pled guilty to burglary charges. Judge David W. Lupas sentenced him to serve between nine and 23 months in the county correctional facility. Lawson’s sentence comes after an extensive investigation into the crime that shocked the local community.
The case shows how police can use technology and careful investigation to track down criminals, even those who think they can escape justice.
Lawson’s actions not only cost the jewelry store a significant amount of money but also led to his lengthy prison sentence, serving as a warning to others who might consider committing similar crimes.
