Breaking News: School Threat Allegation Against 12-Year-Old in Schenectady!
Schenectady Police have arrested a 12-year-old child after an investigation into a threat made against a local school.
The minor has been charged with making a terroristic threat, which is classified as a class D felony. This serious charge came after a threatening message was posted on social media.
The incident began on Monday around 7:30 p.m. when police were informed of a post made on Snapchat. The post, which read, “I’m shooting the school tmr,” caused alarm and prompted immediate action from law enforcement.
Detectives tracked down the source of the message using the IP address associated with the device that posted it. This led them to a home in Mont Pleasant, where they conducted further investigation.
Upon arriving at the residence, officers met with a 12-year-old boy and his parent. The family fully cooperated with the authorities throughout the investigation.
The police questioned the child and, after gathering enough evidence, decided to take him into custody. Additionally, the parent voluntarily handed over a shotgun that was in the home.
The police clarified that while the gun was in the house, it was not in the child’s possession at the time of the threat.
The Schenectady City School District has since confirmed that the child involved is a student at Mont Pleasant Middle School.
The school district released a statement emphasizing that they have been working closely with the police throughout the investigation.
They also reassured the public that, according to police, there is no ongoing threat to the safety of the school or its students.
While no further details were provided about the child’s motives or what may have led to the posting of the threatening message, this incident highlights the seriousness with which authorities treat threats against schools.
The police response was swift, and the cooperation between the school district and law enforcement ensured the safety of the community.
Threats made by minors against schools, even if not carried out, are taken very seriously by law enforcement. In this case, the fact that the minor used social media to make the threat did not shield him from facing serious legal consequences.
Even though the child is young, the charge of making a terroristic threat is a severe one and could have lasting legal consequences for the individual involved.
This incident also serves as a reminder for parents and guardians to be aware of their children’s online activities and the potential legal implications that can arise from irresponsible behavior on social media platforms.
Social media posts, even if made in jest or without serious intent, can quickly escalate into criminal charges, as seen in this case.
The Schenectady Police Department and the school district are urging the community to stay vigilant and to report any potential threats immediately.
The safety of students and staff remains a top priority, and any suspicious activity will be thoroughly investigated to prevent harm.
At the moment, the family of the arrested minor has not commented further or provided additional details about how the legal proceedings will unfold. The authorities have reiterated that, as of now, there is no further threat to the school.
