ITHACA, N.Y. — The New York State Police in Ithaca have arrested 38-year-old Ross Haley on charges of Grand Larceny in the fourth degree, a class “E” felony.

Haley was taken into custody on October 22 following an investigation into an extortion scheme that took place in 2022.

According to authorities, Haley initiated contact with an unidentified victim through text messages.

During the conversation, the victim believed they had received sexually explicit photos of an adult.

However, Haley later claimed the photos were of a nude teenager and threatened to involve the police unless the victim paid him a sum of money.

Fearing legal consequences, the victim complied and transferred $1,300 to Haley via Venmo.

After gathering evidence, the New York State Police arrested Haley as part of their investigation.

Haley was processed at the New York State Police barracks in Ithaca before being transported to the Tompkins County Correctional Facility, where he will face centralized arraignment.

The case highlights the dangers of online extortion schemes and the importance of reporting such incidents to law enforcement.

State Police continue to remind individuals to be cautious when engaging with unknown persons online.
