Brooklyn Man’s Sentence Increased After Arrest for High-Speed Chase and Drug Possession!
Rensselaer County, NY (WRGB) – A Brooklyn man has received an enhanced prison sentence after missing his scheduled sentencing hearing due to a new arrest for an unrelated crime.
Robert Boyd, 38, now faces a total of 10 years in prison, followed by three years of post-release supervision, as announced by Rensselaer County District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly.
Boyd, who had already pled guilty to possessing over eight ounces of cocaine with intent to sell, had been awaiting his sentencing when things took a turn.
On February 16, 2024, Boyd was scheduled to appear in court for sentencing after admitting to his involvement in the drug crime. However, he failed to show up for the hearing, which led authorities to learn that Boyd had been arrested a day earlier in Virginia for a high-speed chase.
According to the DA’s office, Boyd was involved in a dangerous pursuit with Virginia State police, which resulted in his arrest after he crashed his car.
Law enforcement discovered Boyd had narcotics, a loaded firearm, and about $33,000 in cash. As a result of the arrest, Boyd was charged with eluding police, possessing illegal narcotics, and carrying an illegal firearm.
Boyd pled guilty to the new charges in Virginia, but his re-arrest caused his sentencing in Rensselaer County to be delayed.
After Boyd was extradited to Rensselaer County, the judge handling his case, Hon. Jennifer G. Sober, decided to enhance Boyd’s sentence due to the new criminal activity while he was supposed to be awaiting sentencing.
