Caught on Video: Flash-Mob Robbery Nets $90,000 in Southern California Mall
Six people have been arrested in connection with a flash-mob-style robbery at the Westfield Topanga Mall in Canoga Park, California, authorities announced on Sunday.
The robbery, which took place last week, involved four adults and two juveniles and was caught on video.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the incident occurred on October 4 at around 5:15 p.m. Twelve suspects targeted two stores inside the mall, which is located on Victory Boulevard.
The suspects wore masks and hooded sweatshirts as they overwhelmed security and knocked over several display shelves. In total, they stole over $90,000 worth of merchandise.
The LAPD’s Organized Retail Crime Task Force (ORCTF) responded to the scene and took over the investigation. Working alongside LAPD officers from the Topanga area, investigators identified some of the suspects and the getaway vehicles used in the crime.
Just after 9:30 p.m. on the same evening, police stopped one of the vehicles involved in the robbery. All five people inside were detained, and the suspects were identified as being present and actively involved in the crime.
Three adults and two juveniles were arrested and booked for robbery. The same night, just before midnight, officers from the Huntington Beach Police Department arrested another suspect.
The female suspect was found behind the wheel of a second getaway vehicle. Inside the car, officers found stolen items that were confirmed to have been taken during the flash mob robbery. The woman was arrested and booked on felony possession of stolen property.
The adult suspects have been identified as 22-year-old Joshua Jones, 19-year-old Amaya McDonald, 18-year-old Justin Jones, and 26-year-old Rajene Robinson. Joshua Jones is being held on bail for more than $1 million, while Amaya McDonald is being held on bail for $15,000.
Justin Jones is being held on $150,000 bail, and Rajene Robinson is being held without bail. The police are still searching for the remaining six suspects.
