State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling emphasized the severity of the crime, stating, “There must be severe consequences for anyone engaged in the distribution of this deadly drug.

Fentanyl, especially when sold as a fake prescription pill, poses significant risks. In this case, the Defendant’s actions led to the tragic loss of a life. Our office remains committed to prosecuting those who endanger public safety with such harmful substances.”

Even though Maryland Sentencing Guidelines suggest a sentence between two and eight years for this offense, the prosecutor sought the maximum penalty of 20 years. The Court, however, decided on a 16-year sentence, which is above the standard sentencing range.

Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Lisa Ridge, who is the Chief of Narcotics, prosecuted the case. Corporal David Potter from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office was the lead investigator. The Honorable Joseph M. Stanalonis presided over the case.
