Dutchess County Drug Dealer Arrested Twice in One Week Following Recent Narcotics Raids!
A Dutchess County drug dealer has been arrested again, just days after being caught in a recent raid that led to the seizure of illegal narcotics.
The suspect, 25-year-old Leonardo De La Cruz, was involved in a sting operation that led to his second arrest within a week. This follows an investigation that uncovered drug deals happening in broad daylight in the City of Poughkeepsie.
In early October 2024, law enforcement officers from the Dutchess County Drug Task Force, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Unit, the City of Poughkeepsie Police, and the New York State Police conducted a coordinated raid targeting the area around Main Street in Poughkeepsie.
Their investigation had focused on drug sales that had become a serious issue for residents, many of whom complained about the constant activity taking place day and night.
Undercover investigators were able to purchase drugs from three men during this operation. The dealers were identified as 47-year-old Ronald L. Davis, 27-year-old Bernard Diggs, and 25-year-old Leonardo De La Cruz.
Authorities executed search warrants and seized a significant quantity of crack cocaine and fentanyl, further cementing their case against the suspects.
For Davis, this was not his first run-in with the law. He had been arrested earlier in May 2024 on similar charges related to drug possession and intent to sell.
Following this latest arrest, Davis and the other two suspects were arraigned in the City of Poughkeepsie Court. They each faced multiple serious charges, including criminal possession of controlled substances with intent to sell, which are felonies under New York State law.
Despite the severity of the charges, two of the suspects, De La Cruz and Diggs, were released following their arraignment. Davis, on the other hand, was held without bail at the Dutchess County Jail due to his prior criminal record.
In a surprising twist, just days after the initial raid, law enforcement officers began receiving new reports about narcotics being sold behind buildings on Main Street, suspiciously close to where the original investigation had taken place.
Acting on this information, undercover agents once again went to work. They made additional drug purchases and confirmed that the person selling the drugs was none other than De La Cruz, one of the same individuals arrested just days before.
On October 7, 2024, De La Cruz was arrested once again, this time with a fresh stash of illegal drugs. He was found in possession of fentanyl and crack cocaine, both packaged for sale.
De La Cruz was quickly arraigned in court, where he faced even more charges for his involvement in narcotics sales. This second arrest highlights the persistence of drug-related issues in the area and the ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to crack down on illegal activity.
De La Cruz’s repeated arrests raise questions about the efficacy of current measures to curb drug trafficking in Dutchess County.
It’s clear that despite the best efforts of law enforcement, drug sales continue to plague the local community, putting residents at risk and fueling concerns about public safety.
For now, the Dutchess County Drug Task Force remains committed to its mission, but De La Cruz’s arrest twice within such a short time reminds us that there is much work to be done.
