Guttenberg Man Arrested After 12-Hour Standoff With Police and SWAT Team!

A 12-hour standoff in Guttenberg ended with the arrest of a man wanted for multiple crimes, including burglary and criminal mischief, local police said.

Officers initially responded to the area near 70th Street and Hudson Avenue after a report of burglary and property damage. Upon reviewing video evidence, police identified Oliver Checo as the suspect.

According to authorities, Checo was seen kicking in the door of an apartment before entering his own apartment next door.

Checo already had an active warrant for his arrest after damaging the building’s mailboxes two days earlier, police said. When officers tried to contact him, Checo refused to cooperate, barricading himself inside his apartment.

The Hudson County Regional SWAT Team was called to the scene to assist. After a tense 12-hour standoff, authorities managed to apprehend Checo without injuries.

He now faces additional charges, including terroristic threats, resisting arrest, and obstruction, police said.

During a search of Checo’s apartment on Thursday, Dec. 5, officers found a loaded black Smith & Wesson handgun with hollow-point ammunition. Due to his criminal record, Checo was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

This dramatic incident highlights the swift and coordinated response of law enforcement, ensuring public safety during a high-stress situation.
