A tragic fire in Newark, NJ, has left two young girls dead after a devastating blaze broke out during a birthday party. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is leading the investigation into the fatal fire, which occurred in the city’s South Ward.

Officials confirmed the victims were two girls, aged six and eight. Their bodies were severely burned, and they were pronounced dead at the scene.

Carmen Martin, a spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, confirmed the tragic loss of the children.

The fire, which started late Saturday night and continued into the early hours of Sunday, originated on the second floor of a home located on Eckert Avenue, according to RLS Metro Breaking News.

Emergency services were called to the scene around 12:30 a.m., and investigators determined that the fire spread from the second floor to the third.

A birthday celebration for one of the girls was being held at the time of the fire, and witnesses told detectives that the children were seen playing with fire near a couch in the hallway.

It’s unclear exactly how the fire started, but it quickly got out of control, leaving a path of destruction and tragedy in its wake.

Although the exact number of injured individuals is still unknown, footage captured from the scene showed at least one person being carried out on a stretcher.

One witness, a man who had left the home earlier to escape the noise of the party, told ABC7 that he had lost everything in the fire, adding to the heartbreak of the event.

The New Jersey Red Cross is stepping in to assist those affected by the disaster.
