Heartbreaking Incident: Newark Elementary Art Teacher Dies in Car Crash Near School!

A beloved art teacher from East Ward Elementary School, Laura Cuevas, 66, tragically passed away Saturday evening following a car accident earlier in the week.

Cuevas was outside the Arts High School on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Newark on Wednesday morning when two vehicles collided, leading to one car losing control and striking her. She was later taken to the hospital with severe injuries, but despite efforts, she succumbed to her injuries on Saturday.

Staff Development Program Attendance

Cuevas, who taught art at East Ward Elementary School, was attending a professional development session for teachers at Arts High School on Wednesday.

She was reportedly walking back to her car after the program when the unfortunate accident occurred. As the accident happened during a school day off for students, only staff were present at the time.

Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens II confirmed that two other individuals, including another teacher and the drivers involved in the accident, suffered minor injuries but were not critically harmed.

District Community Mourns

In a heartfelt statement, Newark Superintendent Roger León shared the devastating news with the district community on Saturday.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Laura Cuevas, an extraordinary art teacher who brought so much to our students and community,” León stated. “She fought courageously since the incident on Wednesday. Our thoughts are with her husband, sons, and family during this difficult time.”

The news of her passing has deeply affected the school community, with students, parents, and colleagues expressing their condolences and remembering her dedication to her students.
