Heartbreaking Loss: NYPD Detective Killed in Fiery Crash on Palisades Parkway!
A tragic incident took place early Friday morning on the Palisades Interstate Parkway, where an off-duty NYPD detective lost his life in a fiery crash.
The victim, Detective Charles Cato, was 45 years old and had been with the NYPD for 17 years. Police reports say that around 6:00 a.m., he lost control of his vehicle near Exit 19, close to Bear Mountain State Park. His car went off the road, hit a tree, and burst into flames.
When State Troopers from the Haverstraw barracks arrived at the scene at about 6:05 a.m., they found a 2019 Subaru in the median just north of Exit 19. The car had gone off the road for reasons that are still unclear.
Detective Cato was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital but was sadly pronounced dead despite efforts to save him.
The crash is still under investigation. Authorities are asking anyone who may have seen what happened to come forward. You can contact the State Police at Middletown at 845-344-5300 and refer to case number NY2400969180.
The NYPD and many of Cato’s colleagues are deeply saddened by his death. He was known for his commitment to the job and the community after serving for nearly two decades.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face every day, even when they are off duty. As the investigation continues, officials hope to uncover more details about what led to the crash.
