Justice Served: 35 Years in Prison for New York Resident’s Stabbing Death!

A man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison after being convicted for the fatal stabbing of a New York resident in a busy shopping center parking lot.

Augusto Perez, who resides in North Bergen, was sentenced on Wednesday after being found guilty of aggravated manslaughter and hindering apprehension, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

The verdict came after a lengthy six-week trial, where a jury returned two guilty decisions earlier this year. The tragic incident took place on February 16, 2021, at the Bergen Town Center in Maywood.

The 911 call came in at 6:05 p.m., reporting a stabbing at the massive shopping complex located just off Route 4, which is home to 85 stores and restaurants.

When authorities arrived, they discovered the victim, Omar Cruz, a 64-year-old resident of Albany, lying in a pool of blood behind the Ulta Beauty store.

Police reports from that day detail multiple stab wounds on Cruz and a trail of blood in the parking lot that led back to where his body was found.

Despite his severe injuries, Cruz managed to tell police at the scene that it was Perez who had stabbed him. He was immediately taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Perez was apprehended the following day at his home, putting an end to the manhunt. His sentencing marks the conclusion of a case that has deeply affected the community.
