NYC Subway Crash: Two Fugitives on the Loose, One Rocking a Pink Shower Cap!

NYC Subway Crash: Two Fugitives on the Loose, One Rocking a Pink Shower Cap!

New York City for two suspects who allegedly stole an out-of-service subway train and crashed it after walking into a station. One of the suspects, a woman, was seen wearing a bright pink shower cap. Authorities are calling the act reckless and are now looking for the individuals involved.

This unusual crime took place while New York City was already dealing with increased police presence in its subway system to address rising crime rates. The city’s governor, Kathy Hochul, has even called in the National Guard as part of a plan to protect subway riders.

Demetrius Crichlow, the interim president of New York City Transit, said the theft was dangerous and foolish. At a news conference, he explained that the two suspects managed to access the live subway tracks to take control of the train. Crichlow was speaking while announcing a plan to improve the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) system, which has been running for more than 100 years.

According to the police, the incident occurred just after midnight on Thursday at the Briarwood subway station in Queens. A man and a woman stole the empty train and caused a crash that damaged it. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and the suspects quickly ran away.

The stolen train was moved about 50 feet before the crash. As of Wednesday morning, no arrests had been made, and the suspects were still at large. The police released details about the two individuals, hoping the public would help them find them.

The woman was described as having a medium build and complexion. At the time of the incident, she was seen wearing a pink shower cap, a pink sleeveless shirt, pink shorts, and a matching pink handbag. Her accomplice, a man, was said to have a slim build and light complexion. He was dressed in a blue tank top, red shorts, and a black backpack.

Security cameras inside the Briarwood station captured footage of the suspects walking through the empty train before taking it for a short joyride. The MTA has been working on improving security in the subway system by installing more security cameras on trains. Crichlow mentioned that about 70% of the subway trains now have cameras, which helped in capturing footage of the suspects. The video has been turned over to the police, and officials are confident that it will help catch the perpetrators.

In addition to the increased security cameras, Crichlow said that the New York City Transit Authority has been working with the police to design new locks for train operator compartments. The goal is to make it harder for unauthorized people to enter these areas. He said that the design was ready, and the next step was to get the parts and install the new locks across the system.

This incident marks the second time in less than eight months that a subway train in New York City has been stolen. In December 2023, a group of individuals stole two out-of-service subway trains from a restricted area near the Forest Hills-71st Avenue subway station, also in Queens. Like the most recent theft, they were able to access the trains’ operator compartments and drive them for short distances before being stopped.

The theft comes at a time when crime in the New York City subway system has been a growing concern. At the start of 2024, subway crimes had increased by 45% compared to the previous year, driven mostly by grand larcenies. In response to this spike in crime, Governor Hochul took action by deploying 1,000 state workers, including 250 state troopers, to help the NYPD monitor the subway system.

In addition to increasing the number of police officers in the subway, Hochul also directed the National Guard to assign 750 members to help with bag checks. These guards are part of the Joint Task Force Empire Shield, which has been assisting in checking subway riders’ bags for weapons.

Despite the spike in crime earlier in the year, the latest statistics from the New York Police Department show that transit crime has decreased by 5.4% as of Sunday compared to the same time in 2023. While the city has made some progress in addressing crime, incidents like this subway train theft serve as a reminder of the challenges that remain. The police continue to investigate the theft and are urging anyone with information about the suspects to come forward.
