Sacramento Man Sentenced to 110 Years for Attempted Murder of Police Officer!

A Sacramento man received a 110-year prison sentence after a violent confrontation with police in July 2021, during which he fired at officers in a dramatic pursuit.

Ismael Herrera Mondello, who was convicted of multiple charges related to the incident, faced sentencing after his actions led to a neighborhood lockdown and prolonged standoff.

The altercation began on July 7, 2021, when Sacramento police attempted to stop Mondello, then behind the wheel of a reportedly stolen car near 65th Street and Fruitridge Road.

Instead of complying, Mondello accelerated, sparking a high-speed chase that took officers through residential streets. As police pursued, Mondello fired at officers with a semiautomatic weapon, with one bullet reportedly striking a nearby home.

The chase ended in a residential area where Mondello hit a dead end. He then broke into a nearby house, hiding in the attic.

According to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, Mondello fired at officers from a vent, unseen by the police outside. After several hours of tension, SWAT officers deployed tear gas, ultimately forcing Mondello out of the attic.

Upon arrest, authorities recovered two semiautomatic handguns and two 9mm handguns, all of which lacked serial numbers.

Mondello’s charges included attempted murder of a peace officer, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, and felony firearm possession.

In January 2024, Mondello was involved in a separate violent incident while in jail, where he was accused of stabbing a fellow inmate.

Mondello’s case highlights the dangers that law enforcement officers face during high-stakes pursuits, with Sacramento District Attorney Thien Ho remarking that such incidents underscore the need for strong consequences.
