Schoharie County Resident Accused of Illegal Bear Hunting After Social Media Investigation!
FULTON, N.Y. — A man from Schoharie County has landed in legal trouble after allegedly hunting a bear illegally by using bait and sharing pictures of the hunt on social media.
The charges include hunting a bear over bait, tagging violations, and failing to supervise youth hunters properly.
Environmental conservation officers (ECOs) first responded to a report on October 13 about unsupervised youth hunters in a field. Shortly after, on October 20, another officer was informed about an adult allegedly hunting a bear and posting photos of the kill online.
ECOs examined the bear at a local processing facility, where they found an incomplete tag, raising suspicions.
On October 24, officers visited the area where the bear was reportedly shot and discovered cracked corn and sunflower seeds placed as bait.
The investigation led officers to the man’s residence, where he reportedly admitted to placing grain in front of his blinds before the hunt. This admission, combined with the evidence gathered, formed the basis of the charges.
The accused now faces multiple charges, including illegally killing and baiting a bear, failing to properly tag the animal, and not supervising youth hunters as required by law. The case will be heard in the Town of Fulton Court.
This incident highlights the strict regulations around hunting practices in New York State and the role of conservation officers in ensuring wildlife protection.
