Scotia Man Faces 18 Years in Prison After Driving Drunk and High in Fatal Accident!
A Scotia man has been sentenced to 6 to 18 years in prison for causing a fatal car crash while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Gregory Mitchell, 32, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide and reckless assault after a tragic incident on October 21, 2023, that claimed the life of 38-year-old Jacqueline McCole.
The events leading to the crash began when both Mitchell and McCole had been at a bar in Schenectady. According to authorities, surveillance footage showed Mitchell stumbling as he made his way to his vehicle, clearly impaired. Despite his condition, Mitchell proceeded to drive, making several dangerous maneuvers along the way.
He drove the wrong way on a one-way street and stopped at a green light, which immediately raised concerns. As he sped down Eastern Parkway, he drove in the middle of the road, forcing another driver to pull over to avoid a collision. His reckless driving ultimately led to a crash with a parked van in the eastbound lane. The impact pushed the van 30 feet forward, crashing into a telephone pole. McCole, a passenger in the vehicle, tragically died on the scene.
The investigation revealed that Mitchell’s blood alcohol level was at least 0.17%, more than twice the legal limit in New York. Additionally, he had marijuana in his system. Authorities found a half-empty bottle of liquor and a marijuana smoking device in Mitchell’s car after the crash.
