Shocking! Albany Man Arrested for Felony Drug Possession: Fentanyl and Cocaine Seized

An Albany man is now facing serious drug charges after a routine traffic stop in Watervliet led to the discovery of illegal substances.

The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon and has raised concerns about drug possession and distribution in the area.

The traffic stop occurred at around 4:32 p.m. on Wednesday when officers from the Albany County Sheriff’s Community Oriented Policing Effort (SCOPE) pulled over a vehicle near exit 8 on Interstate 787, northbound in Watervliet. The vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation, which quickly turned into a larger investigation.

According to authorities, the driver of the vehicle, Dasir A. Sims, a 23-year-old resident of Albany, was found to be in possession of various illegal substances. After searching the vehicle, officers discovered that Sims had approximately 17.5 grams of cocaine, which they suspect was intended for distribution.

Additionally, Sims was found to have a quantity of fentanyl. This powerful and often deadly synthetic opioid has been linked to a rising number of overdose deaths in the United States. Along with the fentanyl, officers also seized over three ounces of cannabis during the search.

Due to the severity of the drugs found in the vehicle, Sims is now facing multiple charges, including two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, which is classified as a class B felony.

These charges carry serious consequences and reflect the intent to distribute the substances in question.

In addition to the felony charges, Sims was also charged with one count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree, a class A misdemeanor. This charge typically applies to those caught with smaller amounts of controlled substances for personal use.

Sims also faces a violation charge for the unlawful possession of cannabis, which reflects the amount of cannabis found in his vehicle. Although cannabis possession has been decriminalized in some parts of the country, the amount found in this case exceeded legal limits.

Finally, Sims was also cited for the initial traffic violation that led to the stop, although the nature of the violation was not specified in the police report.

This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement in Albany County to combat drug-related crimes.

The Sheriff’s Community Oriented Policing Effort (SCOPE) plays a key role in patrolling the streets and ensuring that individuals transporting or distributing illegal substances are apprehended.

The arrest of Sims also sheds light on the larger issue of fentanyl distribution, which continues to plague communities across the nation.

Fentanyl, often mixed with other drugs, has been responsible for thousands of overdose deaths and remains a major concern for law enforcement agencies.

As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to provide more information on the potential distribution network connected to Sims, as well as the origins of the drugs found in his possession.

His case will likely proceed through the court system, and if convicted of the charges brought against him, he will face serious legal consequences.

This arrest serves as a reminder of the importance of law enforcement efforts in keeping drugs off the streets and protecting communities from the dangers associated with drug distribution.

The possession of drugs like cocaine and fentanyl poses a significant risk not only to those who use them but also to the wider community.
